Multimedia assignment

Due Thursday:
Read Chaps 1-4 in "Journalism 2.0" and then find two examples of multimedia online.
Click the "Comment" link at the bottom of this entry. Post the URLs and write a note explaining what you liked or disliked about the examples you chose.
Here are mine:

Voice of America is the U.S. government's external broadcasting arm. For years and years, it was happy to confine itself to radio. To stay relevant today, it is jumping into television and the Internet in a big way. What I like about this example: a TV host talks about the Large Hadron Collider -- and you can read a text about it on the right.
http://www.spiegel.de/video/video-1042076.html
Spiegel is Germany's most influential newsweekly. For some time now, it has produced a brief newscast on its Web page. What I don't like: the newscast used to use anchors, but doesn't any more. Hmmm. Budget cuts?

I like this site because it has great stories demonstrated with text, but also has video clips, pictures, slideshows, and voice clips.
http://www.times.com/
The MSN homepage has great headline on anything you could imagine someone might be interested in. There are video clips, polls, and quick facts. There was one big ad on the side that kept distracting me though.

The story and the picture do not really mesh well together. A man who killed Pope John Paul II in 1981 was released from prison, and predicted that the world would end this century. How does a picture of him standing in a crowd do that story any justice?

What a well-balanced story. The written article details why Jim Calhoun left the University of UConn. Then, there is a video of an expert opinion by Andy Katz. His expert opinion on Calhoun's decision gives this story a solid backing.

I like this because it is really one of my favorite sites. You can get all of the new information about all of the movies that you can want. There are still pictures, a like to their mugglecast which is their podcast and many other great things.

I think this is a multimedia site because not only can you order and subscribe to the magazine, but you can also enter competitions, get tips and blog about what you're writing.

An interesting feature of the CBS TV news outlet from Boston. They have an area on their website called "conversation nation" where viewers can comment on hot-button issues such as the astonishing election of Republican Scott Brown in Mass. Interesting remarks from the comment section are then displayed on-air during the 5pm newscast.

Here's a blog I frequent titled "Idol Chatter" (http://content.usatoday.com/communities/idolchatter/index).

A few years ago, USA today hired a reporter to solely seek out news stories about American Idol contestants and show alumni. His online blog has become the go-to place for Idol updates. He also reviews albums and provides CD sales from finalists. Interesting how a nationwide newspaper is capitalizing on the biggest show on TV.

This is The Burlington Free Press website. There are videos, photos, and you can comment on the different articles, which is cool for a local newspaper site. Goes beyond just text and pictures.

http://www.newsweek.com/

Newsweek's website shows multimedia for many of the same reasons the Burlington Free Press' website does. This site is slightly more complex though and you can even subscribe to it's twitter account.

On of the better looking site Ive come upon is BBC.com. They have everything you need to see right in the open but its not cluttered up with a bunch of extra stuff of advertisements.
Another is facebook.com. Yeah yeah I know know its facebook, but lets be honest, games, videos, pictures and chat. It has everything and clearly given its popularity is setup quite well.

I like Yahoo! News because it is just very accessible and I like the different options it gives with each story. This Obama story for example gives 2 videos and a slideshow to accompany the text of the story.

I'm a huge Celtics fan so I'm on Celtics.com a lot. I like the setup of their stories about the games. There are lots of visuals to accompany the text from video clips to pics and tables and graphs.

This guys says "I'm just a regular guy trying to make a life for myself in NYC." And thats what he is. Ray has 116,000 subscribers, and puts out a blog every day. His videos reach 200,000+ views on average.

Our own Lyndon State College has an online News source that they call News7Newslinc. I believe it was just created at the end of last year. Good move on News7' part, we must stay competitive with other school News stations.

I found two good examples on nytimes.com. The first is called "Perspectives on Haiti's Earthquake" and can be found at http://www.nytimes.com/interactive/world/haitivoices.html?ref=multimedia. It contains audio clips from numerous people's commentaries on the disaster. The second is a slideshow called "The Battle for a Senate Seat", which shows photos of Massachusetts' Republican and Democratic candidates and their supporters. It can be found at http://www.nytimes.com/slideshow/2010/01/19/us/0119MASSACHUSETTS_10.html.

This site is interesting to me cause you can rank an artist's song in the order you like them. They have sample audio clips for each song so you can listen to them if you forget what it sounds like.

I like this site cause it has video, audio and photos all about the team. There is also news stories.

This is a strange multimedia choice, the writer took an audio track of a man talking and put a slide show of still photographs over it, instead of taking video from the interview. This made the piece more interesting due to the fact that we were not just looking at the mans talking head.http://www.rockymountainnews.com/special-reports/final-salute/
In this story there is just about every type of media available to see for the story they have the written out full text, they have pictures to go along with it and video as well. If you look further down on the page they even have information about the reporters in multiple media formats.

This site is directly related to my life and has some nice (tho outdated) video clips created by the men and women in the vermont air national guard.

This is not only a great reference for fighter aircraft but is acts as a hub for photos, articles and videos of fighter jets worldwide.

What's shown here a fight between characters within the video games Dead or Alive of Xbox and Final Fantasy of Playstation. The reason for me choosing it is because the animation, editing, choice of music and sound effects were done by one person. Yet the level of detail and imagination is better than things i've seen done of Hollywood calibur.
