Blog critique

Due Tuesday, Jan. 28

Go out on the World Wide Web and find a blog. Any blog will do, but I would encourage you to avoid the super-popular ones. Technorati.com can help guide you to blogs on any topic.

I like chickens and Technorati helped me find a blog about raising chickens in the city!
In your critique, please tell us:
- what you like and dislike about the blog;
- how often it is updated (avoid "dead" blogs);
- whether the Comments indicate anyone is reading it;
- what media elements beyond text does it use.
Post your critique on your own blog. Here's my critique of the Urban Chickens blog. Likes: The posts have a lot of interesting information. For instance, did you know that you shouldn't wash the eggs your chickens lay? They are laid with a protective coating. Washing removes the coating. If you leave it on, you don't even have to refrigerate them. Plus, the site has interesting photos of chicken coops. Dislikes: The ads. They're all over the place. Updated? It hasn't been updated since April 2013. It appears to be dead. Comments: Most posts got no more than 1 comment. One got 6; that was among the last posts. Media elements: Just photos. I don't see any video.

For this assignment, I went to Technorati.com to find blogs. I discovered that this website has hundreds of blogs, but the blog I chose was about who handles social media in companies and organizations. According to a study, over 50% say someone in marketing handles social media. For the most part, this blog is very interactive. It provides explanation through extensive text, but it also includes several graphs. Each graph is looking for something different. The first who is a graph that’s titled, “who controls the social media efforts at your organization?” The marketing department had 51% with someone in public relations in 2nd with 18%. The second graph talked about how 62% of companies have no social media, even though it should be a main priority of companies. This blog was posted 4 days ago, but I don’t seem to find a comment section which doesn’t help it’s case for being interactive. Even though there isn’t any comment sections, the author does provide lots of links within the text so that readers can follow the source. If this blog provided a section where readers could comment and have something to watch like a video, then I believe it would be considered a great blog.

I like how this blog is very positive and entertaining. The blogger posts many fun activities, recipes, memories and ideas. I really like the Easter Treats post. However, I think the blogger could use higher quality photos and more step-by-step details on how to make them. The blogger posted A LOT in 2008-2010, but they only have a few posts for this year. It would be nice to have more up to date posts. I like the simplicity of the blog, such as the header photo that says, "I'm thankful for piles of laundry, it means my blessings are nearby."

The comments indicate that there are people reading it. I would not consider it to be a popular blog by any means, but the blogger has a visible group of readers.

For this assignment, I went onto Blogspot.com to find blogs. I discovered a blog of personal trainer and his work-out methods. What I liked about his blog was the design of it, it was very easy to navigate and find what I wanted. What I disliked about his blog was it is directed towards men who are already in good shape. I wanted to see him reach out and connect with the average person more. He has multiple followers who comment on his everyday post. This means many of his followers are engaged and read his post, photos and videos daily. His blog is also filled with instructional you-tube videos for his viewers to watch. He also post pictures daily and has a interactive map.

For this assignment I really wanted to find a blog on the winter X games which just finished Sunday night. I went to Technorati.com and searched winter X games in the search bar and I was unable to find a blog for the X games, but I was able to find this awesome blog by bleachreport.com about Shaun White and how he can use go pro cameras to not only show all his fans his tricks in his view but also as a tool to help him see what he needs to work on. I loved the video they attached. Their article was good to but I feel all I needed to see was the video.

I like the amount of photographic content on the website overall, but the amount of ads they use is distracting. If It was possible for the website to receive more funding I think it would be able to look better. The website/ blog is updated at least once every three days. Users rarely comment on the posts as the commenting function is not easy to figure out. The publisher does a good job writing in depth articles though, for such an unprofessional looking website. I would guess more people would visit this site if they simply put more money into its web design.
